Required Business Function

Not relevant

You can use this business function to segment materials in a structured way, using on certain attributes, for example, Quality and Customer segments. You can also segment the demand elements (such as customer orders or planned independent requirements) and supply elements (such as stock or purchase orders). The system allows you to assign segmentation to a material and activate it for a specific plant. This enables you to segment demand or stock elements in a structured way, without creating separate master data. You can define the mapping of requirements to stock segments in a segmentation strategy. The system uses the mapping rules during material requirements planning (MRP) and the Available-to-Promise (ATP) availability check.

Material segmentation is available in the following logistics processes:

  • SAP ERP material master

  • Retail article master

  • Batch management

  • Sales and distribution

    • Availability check

    • Sales

      • Customer inquiry/ or quotation

      • Sales order

The following are the types of segments:

  • Requirement segment

The segment you assign to the materials in the requirements (for example, Sales Order, Planned Independent Requirement, Stock Transport Order) is called requirement segment. This allows you to subdivide your requirements based on certain criteria such as Quality and Customer Segments.

  • Stock segment

The segment you assign to stock or receipts (for example, Purchase Order, Purchase Requisition) is called stock segment. This allows you to subdivide your stock based on certain criteria such as Quality and Customer Segments.

Segmentation has an influence on your logistic processes. You can assign segments to a material using the segmentation structure and the segmentation strategy.

Segmentation structure is a combination of two or more segments. Segmentation strategy determines how the system assigns the requirement segments to stock segments. The system makes the assignment during ATP and MRP run.

After you assign the segmentation structure and the segmentation strategy to a material in the material master, you can specify the requirement segment for every requirement and the stock segment for stock or receipts.

The applications that match supply with demand, such as MRP and ATP, use the mapping rules you define in the segmentation strategy to decide the stock segment that fulfills a requirement segment. In addition, if there is a shortage of stock, the system uses the mapping rule you define in the segmentation strategy to propose new procurement proposals (for example, purchase requisitions).

The segmentation strategy also decides the consumption of planned independent requirements by sales orders or stock transport orders.
