The software maintenance functions enable you to update your system and implement new functions.

We recommend that you import Support Packages at regular intervals to keep your system as up-to-date as possible. You can do this in the following ways:

  • Support Package Manager

This option is suitable for incorporating a small number of Support Packages (approximately up to 50). For more information about the ABAP Support Package Manager, see Support Package Manager.

  • Software Update Manager (SUM)

This option is suitable for incorporating large numbers of Support Packages, Support Package Stacks or downtime-critical systems, as you can reduce the downtime during the import of Support Packages considerably by using the SUM.

For more information about the SUM, see   http://service.sap.com/sltoolset   Software Logistics Toolset   Software Update Manager  .

To implement minor program corrections or updates from SAP Notes, you can use the Note Assistant.

For ABAP, SAP sometimes updates individual components for your SAP solutions. These updates are shipped as Add-Ons. You can import add-ons with the SAP Add-On Installation Tool. SAP also ships additional functions, such as industry solutions, as Add-Ons. If you want to enhance your SAP solution with new functions, then you can also use the SAP Add-On Installation Tool to do this. For more information, see SAP Add-On Installation Tool.

If you require new functions in Java, you can carry out deployment for both additional SAP components and for non-SAP software components using the SUM. For more information about the SUM, see   http://service.sap.com/sltoolset   Software Logistics Toolset   Software Update Manager  .
