Bottle deposit fees are charges added to the transaction when bottled products, such as soft drinks, are sold. Customers can have these fees refunded when they return the empty bottles to the store.
Bottle deposit and empty bottle return requires the following configurations:
Bottle deposit fee configuration
Empty bottle return process configuration
You must create a bottle fee record for each distinct fee amount required. You can configure a bottle fee as one of the following, depending on the business requirements or system constraints of the store:
PLU item
This method is most efficient in environments where multiple types of bottle fees apply to many bottled products. You set up each bottle fee as a distinct PLU item and then link it to the bottled product PLU. This way the deposit fee is automatically applied every time the bottled product is sold.
Non-merchandise items
This method may be used in environments with fewer defined bottle fees. Scanning the bottled product triggers the Non-merchandise function for the bottle deposit fee.
Empty bottle return processing refers to the functions and processes that allow a cashier to refund bottle deposit fees to customers when they return empty bottles to the store.
The bottle deposit fee refund process can be activated in any of the following ways depending on the configuration method chosen for the bottle deposit:
Through a defined function using manager codes 434/435 — Begin/End Empty Bottle Return Processing
Manager code 434 sets the POS into Empty Bottle Return Processing
mode and treats every item entered in this
mode as a bottle return. The cashier can scan each empty bottle individually, or use the Qty
key to enter the number of bottles being returned. The cashier must remember to end this mode after all empty bottles have been entered by activating the manager code 435 function: End
Empty Bottle Return Processing
.
Note
This method of bottle return processing only supports bottle deposits configured as non-merchandise records. It does not support bottle deposit fees created as PLU items.
Both manager codes 434 and 435 are usually mapped to keyboard keys or appear as functions on the screen. The function descriptions can be configured.
Through a defined function using manager Code 436 — Process Empty Bottle Then Resume Regular Sale
mode
This function allows the cashier to trigger the empty bottle return function and either enter a single bottle or use the Qty
key
to enter the number of bottles being returned. After the empty bottle information is entered, the POS resumes regular transaction mode.
Note
This method of bottle return processing only supports bottle deposits configured as linked PLU records. It does not support bottle deposit fees created as non-merchandise records.
By scanning or manually entering the bar code from a bottle redemption receipt
The receipt may be issued by an empty bottle collection machine or by a POS designated for empty bottle collection. The receipt may be processed within a regular transaction, or in a separate transaction.
