InfoAreaLocate this document in the navigation structure

InfoAreas in the BW Modeling tools serve to structure objects (InfoProviders, InfoObjects, InfoSources and open hub destinations) in the SAP BW metadata repository.

An InfoArea () can contain other InfoAreas as subnodes. In an InfoArea, BW metadata objects are structured according to their object type in semantic folders () such as CompositeProvider or DataStore Object (advanced). Semantic folders are only displayed if a BW metadata object exists for the corresponding object type.

The hierarchy of the InfoAreas is displayed in the BW Repository tree and, in the case of InfoAreas that have been added to the favorites, in the Favorites tree.

Note As previously, DataSources are structured according to the application components of the corresponding source system.
Assignment of Objects to InfoAreas

Every InfoProvider and every open hub destination in the system is normally assigned to an InfoArea, as the assignment was required when creating objects in the SAP and is still required now when creating objects in the BW Modeling tools.

For InfoObjects, the following applies:

  • Existing characteristics that were created in the Data Warehousing Workbench and assigned to an InfoArea there in InfoObject maintenance are also assigned to this InfoArea in the BW Modeling tools.

  • In the case of existing InfoObjects that were created in the Data Warehousing Workbench without InfoArea assignment, a logic is applied at runtime to assigned these to InfoAreas in the BW Modeling tools.

  • InfoObjects that are created in the BW Modeling tools are assigned to an InfoArea when created.

  • Authorization object S_RS_IOBJA takes the InfoArea into account rather than the InfoObject catalog.

  • If you change the InfoArea assignment for exisiting InfoObjects in the BW Modeling tools, (context menu entryMove or Drag&Drop) the assignment and display in the Data Warehousing Workbench does not change.

Case 1: An InfoObject is assigned to InfoArea A in the Data Warehousing Workbench. The assignment was not changed using the BW Modeling tools. In accordance with the assignment to InfoArea A in the Data Warehousing Workbench, the InfoObject is also displayed under InfoArea A in the BW Modeling tools.

Case 2: An InfoObject is assigned to InfoArea A in the Data Warehousing Workbench. The assignment was changed to InfoArea B using the BW Modeling tools. The object is displayed under InfoArea A in the Data Warehousing Workbench and under InfoArea B in the BW Modeling tools.

Note In the BW Modeling tools, a logic is applied at runtime to determine the assignment of InfoObjects to InfoAreas. You can use migration report RSDG_IOBJ_IOBC_MIGRATE_TO_AREA to persist the assignment and thus improve performance. If you run this report, the assignment is persisted as displayed in the BW Modeling tools. The Data Warehousing Workbench then also applies this assignment.

For InfoSources, the following applies:

  • Existing InfoSources that were created in the Data Warehousing Workbench and assigned to application components there are assigned to the InfoArea NODESNOTCONNECTED in the BW Modeling tools. You can move the InfoSources from there to InfoAreas of your choosing.

In the Data Warehousing Workbench, existing InfoSources are still displayed under application components.

  • InfoSources that are created in the BW Modeling tools are assigned to an InfoArea when created.

  • Authorization object S_RS_TRCS takes the InfoArea into account rather than the application component.
