Purpose

Real-Time Collaboration (RTC) enables users of SAP Enterprise Portal to communicate through interactive online meetings and to exchange information.

Users can instantly interact with work colleagues logged on to the portal, regardless of their geographical location. Teamwork between globally dispersed units is facilitated, productivity is enhanced, and reducing travel cuts organizational costs.

Note

The RTC capabilities in SAP NetWeaver are recommended for scenarios that include the occasional use of instant messaging, and application-sharing services by a specific group of company-internal portal users-more specifically, one-to-one application sharing sessions and chat sessions with up to eight users. See SAP Note 1038125Information published on SAP site .

For large portal installations, the performance and sizing impacts of RTC should be considered (see SAP Note 948298Information published on SAP site ). For the intensive use of RTC services, third-party integration is recommended.

Due to ActiveX requirements, the instant messaging and application sharing capabilities provided by Real-Time Collaboration (RTC) are only supported in a Microsoft Internet Explorer browser.

Integration

RTC functions as a service provider for the Synchronous Collaboration Framework (SCF) to offer its application sharing capabilities. For more information, see Synchronous Collaboration Framework .

Features

The collaboration features provided by RTC to portal business users at runtime are as follows:

  • Instant messaging:Enables portal users to communicate with one another in real time by means of instant text-based messages.
  • Application sharing:Enables portal users to share and interact directly with applications running on a user's desktop.

For information on how to use the portal's real-time collaboration features after you have installed, configured, and customized the appropriate Collaboration for SAP Enterprise Portal components, see the following sections in the SAP NetWeaver Getting Started documentation:
