Use

You must maintain the following attributes for each new term:

  • Part of speech

  • Gender (depending on the language of the term)

Part of Speech

Terms can have the following parts of speech:

  • Noun

  • Proper Noun

  • Verb

  • Adjective

  • Adverb

If you cannot identify the word type of a term, use the following guidelines:

Noun

Nouns are words or expressions that refer to persons, places, things, circumstances or attributes.

Nouns also have the following characteristics:

  • They can be associated with an article.

  • They can be declined.

Proper Noun

Proper nouns are words or expressions that represent a unique entity, such as London, Jupiter, or SAP.

Verb

Verbs identify actions.

Verbs can be conjugated.

Adjective

Adjectives define properties of nouns.

Adjectives can be declined like nouns.

Adverb

Adverbs describe situations.

They are neither declined nor conjugated.

Adverbs answer the questions How, When, or Where?

Note

Enter prepositional phrases in the terminology database as adverbs. For example:

  • in time

  • at the end of the transaction

Gender

You may also need to maintain the gender of a noun, depending on the language for which you are maintaining the term.

Administrators can define the grammatical information that is relevant for a specific language under Start of the navigation path Administration Next navigation step Global Settings Next navigation step Languages Next navigation step Select Grammatical Attributes End of the navigation path.

Note

English nouns do not require a gender attribute so the function for setting this attribute does not appear. Nouns in some languages require attributes for gender, so attributes for gender appear when you select Noun as the part of speech for a term.
