Monitoring Backups

Purpose

It is not sufficient to simply schedule backups. You must also check regularly whether they were completed successfully. In the past there have been many situations where neglecting to do so resulted in a data loss for days or weeks.

Process Flow

Always check that:

The most recent backup has run successfully.
All the backups in the backup cycle are being executed according to the schedule. Gaps in a backup sequence can have serious consequences in a subsequent attempt to restore the database.
The backup and restore process works successfully and enables you to restore your database to a correct and consistent state.
