Creating InfoProvidersLocate this document in the navigation structure

Use

The Data Warehouse layer and the architected data mart layer are made up of InfoProviders.

InfoProviders are BW objects that data is loaded into or which display views of data. You analyze this data in BEx queries.

There are InfoProvider types in which the data is stored physically and InfoProvider types that are only views on the data. In BEx Query Designer, they are seen as uniform objects however.

More information:

The following graphic shows how InfoProviders are integrated in the dataflow:

Prerequisites

Make sure that all the InfoObjects you want to add to the InfoProvider are available in an active version. Create and activate any InfoObjects that do not exist yet.

Instead of creating a new InfoProvider, you can install an InfoProvider from the BI Content delivered by SAP.

Procedure

There are two ways of creating a new InfoProvider in the Data Warehousing Workbench:

  • In graphic modeling

  • In the InfoProvider tree

Create InfoProvider in Graphic Modeling

You have created a new data flow in the data flow tree or are editing an existing data flow. More information: Creating Data Flows or Data Flow Templates

  1. To create an InfoProvider in the data flow maintenance screen, first create a non-persistent object and choose Create in the context menu for the non-persistent object. The InfoProvider processing screen appears.

Create InfoProvider in the InfoProvider Tree

  1. Select the InfoArea to which you want to assign the new InfoProvider, or create a new InfoArea. In the Data Warehousing Workbench, choose Start of the navigation path Modeling Next navigation step InfoProvider Next navigation step Create InfoArea End of the navigation path.

  2. In the context menu for the InfoArea, choose the type of InfoProvider that you want to create.

  3. Enter a name and a description for the InfoProvider. You can also enter details for the objects on which you are basing the InfoProvider.

  4. Choose Create. The InfoProvider processing screen appears.

Further Procedure:

  1. Copying InfoObjects:

On the left side of the screen, there are various templates to choose from. These allow you to get a better overview in relation to a particular task. For performance reasons, the default setting is an empty template. You use the pushbuttons to select different objects as templates.

The InfoObjects that are to be added to the InfoProvider are divided into the categories characteristic, time characteristic, key figure, and unit. You have to transfer at least one InfoObject from each category.

On the right-hand side of the screen, you define the InfoProvider. Use drag and drop to assign the InfoObjects in the dimensions and the Key Figures folder. You can select several InfoObjects at once. You can also transfer entire dimensions using drag and drop. The system assigns navigation attributes automatically. These navigation attributes can be switched on to analyze data in BEx.

    Or:

You also have the optoin of inserting the InfoObjects without selecting a template: This makes sense if you already know exactly which InfoObjects you want to add to the InfoProvider. In the context menu for the folders for dimensions or key figures, choose Insert InfoObjects. In the dialog box, you can now enter and add up to 10 InfoObjects either directly or using input help. You can then reassign them using drag and drop.

  2. For more information about the object-specific settings, see:

The method for creating VirtualProviders is the same as for InfoCubes. The method for creating InfoSets is not the same as for other InfoProviders.

    More information: Creating InfoSets

  3. In the context menu for the Key Figures folder and the Data Fields folder, you can Insert New Hierarchy Nodes. You can thus sort the key figures in a hierarchy. You then get a better overview of large quantities of key figures when defining queries.

    More information: Defining New Queries

  4. If you want to follow changes to your InfoProvider over a given period, you can create a manual version. To do this, choose Start of the navigation path Goto Next navigation step Version Management End of the navigation path in the main menu.

    More information: Version Management

  5. Save or activate the InfoProvider.

Only activated InfoProviders can be supplied with data and used for reporting and analysis.
