Background documentationAssembly Data Type

Assembly data types define a group of assembly data fields that are displayed during manufacturing and they capture the values associated with the component that was assembled.

Predefined assembly data types, along with associated data fields, are loaded during the initial installation of the application. In addition, you can create your own assembly data types and associated data fields or modify the predefined assembly data types (see Data Field Definition and Assignment).

The assembly data type is then assigned to the material in Material Maintenance. The data fields associated with the assembly data types can be collected at three distinct phases during manufacturing. The first is upon receipt of the material on the shop floor. The second is when the material is built into an assembly as a component. The last is when the material is removed or replaced because of quality issues. During each of these manufacturing actions the data fields are displayed to personnel on the shop floor for data value entry.

This assembly data entry is a key component of product genealogy. This data is often used to search for product that may have quality issues related to the component.
