IP Address (Client)  Locate the document in its SAP Library structure

Technical name: 0WEB_C_IP

Use

This characteristic contains the IP address (Internet protocol) of the client, meaning, the visitor to a Website.

Every local computer that is linked to the Internet or to an Intranet is allocated a unique address. This address can be temporary or permanent. The IP address is a number of the data type 'long' (232 bits).

An IP address as used by a computer in an Intranet looks, for example, like this: 10.18.90.106

For the connection to the Internet, the address looks, for example, like this: 168.144.74.126

The organization of the specified IP addresses is also called class-based addressing. The IP addresses are divided into 4 different classes (for example, A and B), depending on the size of the network.

As class-based addressing, as a result of the huge growth of servers available in the Internet, led to a scarcity of addresses, the Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR) standard was introduced. These addresses look like this: 1.123.22.156/24. The first four groups of numbers represent the address, and the value /24 represents the network ID.

Domain names were introduced because IP addresses are not very meaningful. For example, the domain name for the IP address 204.154.71.132 is http://www.sap.com/.

Note Tip

In this InfoObject, the IP addresses are inserted using the log files. In order to obtain the domain names for the text table, you can, for example, carry out the domain lookup procedure. This procedure looks for names that fit the numerical IP addresses. Domain lookups are provided in the World Wide Web.
