Configuring the RSS Reader Module Template (Deprecated)Locate this document in the navigation structure

Prerequisites

You are assigned the portal Content Admin role and the Workspace Content Administration role.

Context

Note

This module is now deprecated. Any existing workspaces that include this module should continue to work as previously. For new configurations, use the Enterprise Feed module instead. If you previously added this module to the module gallery, we recommend that you remove it now. For more information about the Enterprise Feed module, see Configuring the Enterprise Feed Module Template.

Enterprise workspaces come with a module template, named RSS Reader, for displaying the content of an RSS 2.0 feed.

A typical system is able to handle approximately 150 unique RSS feeds. We recommend that for each RSS feed that you want workspace members to be able to access, you first make a copy of the RSS Reader module template, define the specific RSS feed URL and other properties for the copy of the RSS Reader module template, and then expose the configured copy of the RSS Reader module template in the Module Gallery. This enables you to control the number and type of RSS feeds and feed items accessed at runtime, and thereby optimize system performance.

Note

The RSS Reader module is designed to support public, unauthenticated feeds. We do not recommend using the RSS Reader module for personal feeds.

Procedure

  1. In the portal, navigate to Start of the navigation path Workspace Administration Next navigation step Module Templates End of the navigation path.
  2. Select the RSS Reader module template, and choose Duplicate.
  3. In the General Properties tab, enter a meaningful name for the copy of the module template.
  4. In the General Properties tab, in the Available in section, select one or more locations in which the copy of the RSS Reader module template will be available: Module gallery, Application list, and Report list.
  5. In the Additional Properties tab, locate and modify the following RSS Reader-specific properties, as required:

    Property

    Description

    Number of Items

Specify the maximum number of RSS feed items that can be displayed at runtime

    Recommendation

For performance reasons, we recommend not to exceed the default number of 50 items. You can reduce the number of items to improve performance if needed.

    RSS - Module Style

Specify how to display the RSS module. Possible values are:

    • Headlines: Displays titles and images for each feed item

    • Details: Displays titles and summary descriptions for each feed item

    RSS - Retrieval Method

Specify whether to retrieve the RSS content from the AS Java Server or from the Client. Displaying content from the server is more secure.

    Recommendation

For performance reasons, where possible (if there is no need to support cross-domain requests), we recommend that you select Client.

    RSS - URL

Specify the URL of the RSS feed.

    Note

Only public unauthenticated RSS 2.0 feeds are supported; other feed types are not supported.

If you have configured your AS Java to use a proxy server for HTTP requests, all RSS feed requests will pass through the proxy server.

    RSS - Use Browser Cache

Specify whether to use the browser cache when retrieving RSS feeds.

    Recommendation

For performance reasons, we recommend that you leave this option selected.

    Note

The RSS Reader module utilizes the ICM server cache and the browser cache to enhance performance. You can modify the timeouts for each cache, if required, by choosing Start of the navigation path Workspace Administration Next navigation step Configuration End of the navigation path and then selecting the Modules tab. The two cache timeout properties are in the RSS Reader Module section of the Modules tab.

  6. Choose Done. The preconfigured RSS Reader module template is available in the selected locations for users to add to workspaces (after they clear the browser cache).
