Purpose

You can use Online Planning both for checking the results of automatic planning and on its own. The following figure illustrates possible uses:

This graphic is explained in the accompanying text

You can use Online Planning to verify existing purchase orders and include additional items in them. It can also be used to order articles even if no purchase orders have already been created. You can have the system suggest vendors, articles and order quantities that you then verify based on other information.

In Online Planning, you can plan articles for which a requirement was determined and also articles for which no requirement was determined (for example, to enable you to achieve certain minimum order criteria).

Process Flow

The following is an example of a typical scenario:

  1. The consumption-based planning run is executed for a distribution center, resulting in purchase requisitions.
  1. The purchase requisitions are converted to purchase orders.
  1. The stock planner in the distribution center calls up Online Planning and creates a worklist for all vendors from which the company usually orders that day.

He enters the following selection parameters:

  1. The vendor looks through the purchase orders that have been created for each vendor.
  1. For each purchase order, he selects additional articles from the vendor. Since the system did not report any requirements for these articles, he has the system use the range of coverage to suggest how much to order.
  1. The stock planner includes some of these articles in the existing purchase orders to optimize the orders (and reach the minimum order quantity, for example).
  1. The stock planner saves the changed purchase orders as well as those he created new.
