Use

The PDC interface in SAP Retail Store gives you the option of dealing with important business processes in your store using PDC units. The interfaces are designed in such a way that the user can work purely supported by PDC. The central SAP Retail System processes the data, SAP Retail Store only deals with the control and release functions for the corresponding processes.

The PDC units are linked using outbound and inbound interfaces. They are supplied with process-relevant data using outbound interfaces. You can operate the PDC units in online mode (there is a permanent connection to SAP R/3) or offline mode (a connection is only established when transferring data).

Implementation Considerations

In order to ensure that working with the PDC units is efficient you must use these interfaces in conjunction with SAP Retail Store.

Application programs on the PDC units and communication mechanisms between the PDC units and the SAP Retail System or between the PDC units and the PC in the store have to be supplied by third-party providers. The option exists for you to use the SAP Business Connector to communicate between head office and the store.

Integration

Unlike with the browser-based PDC procedure, data is not transferred using the Internet browser and ITS when using the RFC/IDoc-based PDC procedure. The PDC units can be linked to SAP R/3 using the SAP Business Connector or directly using a suitable PDC server from a third-party provider. SAP provides special help programs on the SAP Business Connector to enable communication using XML files, should it be needed.

Using the RFC/IDoc-based PDC procedure you can provide your centrally controlled PDC units with relevant data. This is particularly suitable for maintenance of larger data sets. The maximum amount of data that can be handled depends mainly on the capacity of the PDC units you are using. Confirmation that the data has been entered in the PDC units is sent directly to the SAP Retail System.  When using the RFC/IDoc-based procedure, the role of the SAP Retail Store is to monitor the data supply to the PDC units and their confirmation and, if necessary, to release data or perform subsequent postings.

From a purely technical point of view, PDC units can be used independently of SAP Retail Store applications. By integrating them into SAP Retail Store, SAP Retail Store takes on monitoring and release activities within the framework of the business processes.
