Selecting Original and Target Languages in SAPterm

Purpose

Set the permitted languages for creating source term entries and for defining language directions in the translation of target term equivalents in SAPterm.

The Create Term function in SAPterm restricts users to a select number of original (source) languages. Similarly, the Translate Term function requires users to select language directions when entering an equivalent term (the “translation”) in a target language.

The following factors affect these settings.

  • Available languages installed in the SAPterm system
  • Source and target languages permitted by the SAPterm administrator
  • User role authorizations for these languages
  • Language and language direction selections in the individual user settings

Making a language available in SAPterm includes the selection of grammatical information, such as the parts of speech, to be mandatory for all term entries in that language.

Prerequisites

The function is restricted to users with SAPterm administrator authorization.

Procedure

  1. In the initial SAPterm screen choose Start of the navigation pathAdministration Next navigation step Global Settings Next navigation step Languages Next navigation step  Select Original LanguagesEnd of the navigation path and Select Target Languages to make the respective settings.

Select the desired language in the relevant screen and choose Create to add it to either list of permitted languages. Choose Delete to remove a language from these lists.

  2. Select mandatory grammatical information for each term in newly-added original or target languages by choosing Start of the navigation pathAdministration Next navigation step Global Settings Next navigation step Languages Next navigation step Select Grammatical AttributesEnd of the navigation path.

Select the desired language. Then select the parts of speech and, in languages with gendered nouns and proper nouns, select the relevant genders. Choose Save to activate these attributes.

Attributes selected in error for a language can be safely deselected and deactivated if no term entries use these attributes in the language. If any terms already use them, the grammatical information must be erased directly from the SAPterm database table before the deactivation can take effect.
