Single-value
Some properties of an object are unambiguous. For example, the Length of a bolt can only be one value, such as 2 inches or 4 inches. It cannot be both 2 inches and 4 inches. You define this kind of characteristic as a single-value characteristic.
Multiple values
Some properties of an object can have several values. For example, the Package size of a bolt can be both boxes of 500 and boxes of 1000. You define the package size as a multiple-value characteristic, so that the values "500" and "1000" can be assigned at the same time.
