Use

The values of characteristics are displayed for characteristic value assignment in one of the following ways, as defined in either characteristics maintenance or your user settings:

  • As a list of values

  • As an interval value

  • As a combination of list and intervals

  • As a value hierarchy

  • Without allowed values

There are different ways to assign values to characteristics:

  • You can type in an allowed value for a characteristic.

  • You can select a value from the F4 help (possible entries).

Note

Tip:

You can select a value by double-clicking in the F4 help.

  • For single-value characteristics, the value is copied directly to the value field.

  • For multiple-value characteristics, double-clicking selects or deselects the value, then you copy the values to the value fields by choosing Continue/Enter.

  • You can restrict an interval.

Values must match the format defined for the characteristic.

You can use object dependencies to infer a value for a characteristic.

Additional Values

You can only assign a value that is not in the allowed values if the Additional values indicator is set on the Values tab of the characteristic. In the possible entries, you see an additional field where you can enter an additional value.

The indicators you set in a characteristic determine how the characteristic is handled in value assignment functions:

  • Characteristics are usually available for entry – you can assign a value.

The following exceptions apply:

  • The Not ready for input indicator is set in the characteristic. This means that you cannot enter a value for the characteristic. However, you can use object dependencies to infer a value.

  • Reference characteristics are not available for entry, because the value is taken from a table field and displayed on the value assignment screen (see the section on Reference Characteristics in the SAP Library, Characteristics (CA-CL-CHR).

  • You can define that you must assign a value to a characteristic when you classify an object.

  • You can define a characteristic as either single value or multiple value.
