Modeling Direct Data Access
Use
You can also model the data flow so that you do not need to load the data into the BW system. Instead, you can access it directly for reporting and analysis purposes. The VirtualProvider is used as the data structure.
VirtualProviders are InfoProviders whose transaction data is not stored in the object itself, but is read directly for analysis and reporting purposes. The relevant data can be from the BW system or from other SAP or non-SAP systems. VirtualProviders only allow read access to data.

Creating Characteristics with Direct Access
You can directly access the data in the source system for an InfoObject of type characteristic that you have selected for use as an InfoProvider.

In BEx queries, you can use hierarchies with direct access. This is recommended for small hierarchies that do not change often.
