Creating an Exploded View

Prerequisites

You are working with 3D models.

Context

As an author, you can create and customize exploded views of models. You can select nodes or objects in a 3D model both before and after generating an exploded view. During the generation process, you can customize your preferences for the resulting exploded view.

Procedure

  1. Open the file for which you wish to create an exploded view.
  2. Open the Views Gallery, if it isn’t already open.

All your current views are displayed at the bottom of the viewport, grouped where applicable.

  3. Select a view to use as the basis for the exploded view you are going to generate. Alternatively, you can select an object in the viewport. Then choose (Generate Exploded View).

The Generate Exploded View window appears.

  4. Edit the exploded view as needed using the options in the Generate Exploded View Assistant. You can:
    • Give your exploded view a unique name using your nominated name prefix. If you're creating one view, then this will be the name of the exploded view. If you're creating multiple views, a sequential number is added as a suffix so that each view has a unique name.

    • Group objects in the scene into the explosion list to control the explode order.

If a selection was present before launching the tool, then the objects are added to the explosion list according to the last active grouping rule. The anchor is determined based on the placement and orientation of the object with the largest bounding box area. This occurs automatically, but you can adjust as needed.

    • Select your anchor point. The initial anchor point is based on the largest object in the viewport, but you can adjust as needed.

    • Orient and position objects in the viewport to align with your requirements. You can also move objects according to axes, direction, mode, and magnitude. See Moving Objects for an Exploded View.

    • Select objects to include in the exploded view. See Selecting Objects for an Exploded View.

    • Use the grouping mechanism to determine how objects are added to the explosion list. You can group objects in the exploded view according to grouping types. See Grouping Objects in the Explosion List.

  5. Select your view generation preferences. See Managing View Generation Options for an Exploded View.
  6. When your view customizations are complete, click Generate.

The new exploded view appears in the Views Gallery.

  7. Activate the exploded view by selecting it.
