Searching for Diagrams or Objects

You can search for any diagram or object from most screens. You can filter by location, model and object type and many other properties, and then review an object's properties, open a diagram, or export your results to a CSV or PDF file.

Procedure

  1. Click the Search button in the application header bar to open the Search dialog.
  2. Enter the text you want to find in the Search field at the top of the dialog and click the Search button.
    The search results are displayed:

    • Click an object to select it. If the property pane is open, its property sheet is displayed.

    • Click the Open button to open the selected object in its diagram. If the object appears in multiple diagrams, a dialog is displayed to allow you to choose which one to open.

    The following tools and fields are also available above the list of results:

    Match Case - [If you database supports case-sensitive search] Specifies that the results must match the case of the search string. This parameter is enabled when the tool is surrounded by a rounded square, and only applies to object names and codes.

    In

    Select the type of search. You can select:

    • Name Only to search objects names only

    • Code Only to search objects codes only

    • All Fields (Full Text) to launch a full text search.

    Group - Groups objects by type.

    Properties - Displays or hides the Properties panel that contains detailed information about the selected object.

    Export to CSV - Exports the list of results to a CSV file.

    Export to PDF - Exports the list of results to a PDF file.
  3. [optional] On the Location tab in the top-left corner, navigate to a particular folder, branch, project, or model in the repository tree to restrict the search to its contents.

    If some cases, the default search folder can be the folder where you selected an item returned by your last successfull search. You can quickly redirect the search to your current model, folder or branch at any time by clicking the appropriate item in the top left section of Location tab (if your search was initiated from a diagram) or browse the repository tree in the lower section of this tab to specify a new search location.

    The results are cleared. Click the Search button to search again.

  4. [optional] On the Filter tab in the top-left corner, add appropriate property filters to restrict the search by these criteria:

    • Model Type - For example, to search only for tables, views, and columns, select Physical Data Model.

    • Object Type - For example, to search only for tables, select Table.

    • Any other property - Click Add Filter to add a property/value pair to filter by.

    The results are cleared. Click the Search button to search again.

  5. [optional] Use the in list to the right of the search field to specify which text fields you want to search for your search string in:

    • Name Only - [default] To search for objects by their human-readable names.

    • Code Only - To search for objects by their technical names.
