Monitoring Background Processing Alerts

Context

You can monitor the status of background processing in your R/3 System with the CCMS Alert Monitor (transaction RZ20).

Procedure


  1. Start the Alert Monitor using transaction RZ20 or choose Start of the navigation pathCCMS Next navigation step Control/Monitoring Next navigation step Alert MonitorEnd of the navigation path.

  2. On the CCMS Monitor Sets screen, expand the SAP CCMS Monitor Templates set.

  3. In the list of monitors, start the Background Processing monitor. For this, put the cursor on the Background Processing monitor and choose Start Monitor.

    The Background Processing monitor shows both system-wide indicators of the background performance and three sorts of monitoring information for each SAP instance that offers background processing.

    The following table returns further information about the content of the alert monitor.

    Utilization

    Percentage of available capacity of background processing currently in use. The value is normalized across the number of Background Work Processes. Alerts are based upon average values over a period of time.

    Server-specific queue length

    The number of jobs that are released and eligible to run but for which there are no free background work processes.

    Utilization and Server-Specific Queue Length together show you whether you have a serious shortfall in your background processing capacity.

    A high load and low queue length are optimal.

    High utilization and high queue length show that your system has not been able to satisfy background processing requirements during the alert time period.

    High utilization can quickly lead to problems with the queue length. If the monitor shows continually shows high utilization (> 90%), then you should add extra background capacity.

    Aborted Jobs

    Individual jobs that terminated abnormally. A separate red alert is generated for each of these jobs.

    System-Wide Queue Length

    Number of jobs that are ready to be executed and have start authorization, but for which there are no free background work processes, averaged across all background servers.

    Global system queue length gives you a single overview statistic for background processing in your system. Even if one background server is having trouble, a low system-wide queue length shows that the problem is local to that server.
