How to Migrate Your Data

Context

When exploring or implementing your SAP S/4HANA solution, you can migrate your master data and business data from ABAP-based SAP systems and non-SAP systems to your SAP S/4HANA cloud system. You can open the SAP S/4HANA Migration Cockpit from the app Manage Your Solution.

The relevance of data migration depends on the phase:

Phase

Relevance of Data Migration

Explore

SAP provides a running solution with sample data for exploration. You can optionally migrate your own data for a customized evaluation experience.

Preset

As in this phase the solution content is not activated, data migration is not possible.

Realize

Before adapting your business processes, you need to migrate your own data to the cloud system. By performing dry runs of the data migration, you make sure that during the Deploy phase data migration will work smoothly.

Deploy

Shortly before enabling the productive use of your solution, you migrate your current data to the cloud system.

Run & Operate

No data migration.

Change

You can migrate data from the productive system to the test system in order to test changed processes.

Prerequisites

  • In the app Manage Your Solution, you have specified the relevant SAP S/4HANA solution versions. The SAP S/4HANA Migration Cockpit uses this information to determine the data that is relevant for the migration, and to identify the migration objects for the project.
  • To transfer data using the SAP S/4HANA Migration Cockpit, role SAP_CA_DMC_MC_USER is required. To use the SAP S/4HANA Migration Object Modeler, role SAP_CA_DMC_MC_DEVELOPER is required.

The general process for migrating data to SAP S/4HANA is as follows:

Procedure

  1. On the home page of the app Manage Your Solution, choose Migrate Your Data.
  2. Open or create a migration project.
  3. Check that the migration objects are relevant for your project.
    Note

Migration objects are defined by SAP, and describe how to migrate data from the source system (which tables are needed and the relationships between the tables) to SAP S/4HANA.

The application uses the SAP S/4HANA edition that you specify in the app Manage Your Solution to identify the migration objects for your project.

  4. Specify the relevant data for each migration object. You do this by using XML files. You must assign one or more files to each migration object that is relevant for the transfer. You can do this on the Files tab of the migration object.
  5. Once you have specified a file for the migration object, you can transfer the data for that migration object to SAP S/4HANA. You can do this on the Files tab of the migration object. You repeat this process for each migration object that is relevant for your project.
  6. In the Overview tab of the migration object, you can monitor the progress of the transfer.
  7. When the activity Transfer Data is complete, the data has been migrated to SAP S/4HANA successfully.
