Software Logistics

Use

Software logistics provides tools and processes with which you can manage your system landscape in all lifecycle phases. Besides initial implementation of an application, the tools also support on-going system optimization and adaptation to evolving demands, as well as implementing additional functions.

The software logistics functions standardize and automate lifecycle management tasks in complex system landscapes.

Features

Technical Implementation

In a system landscape you regularly have to implement new functions either by adding new systems to an existing landscape or by creating a completely new landscape.

Installation

You can set up a new system landscape or add further scenarios to your system landscape and reuse existing system and components for it. The central installation tool is Software Provisioning Manager. The central document for the installation in question is the Installation Guide. This document contains links to all documents that you need for implementation.

Transports of ABAP and Non-ABAP Objects

You can use Change and Transport System (CTS) to organize developments projects in ABAP Workbench and customizing projects and to transport your changes to the SAP systems of your system landscape. You can also use the Enhanced Change and Transport System to transport and non-ABAP objects together with the ABAP objects in your system landscape.

Importing Support Packages

We recommend that you import support packages at regular intervals to keep your system as up-to-date as possible. You have the following options:

  • Support Package Manager

This option is suitable for importing a small number of ABAP support package stacks or support packages (up to approximately 50 SPs).

  • Software Update Manager (SUM)

This option is suitable for incorporating large numbers of support packages, support package stacks or downtime-critical systems, as you can reduce the downtime during the import of support packages considerably by using the SUM.

System Maintenance with Software Update Manager (SUM)

Use SUM to perform further system maintenance activities on SAP software. This can include the following activities:
  • Release upgrade
  • System update (installation of enhancement packages)
  • Applying Java patches
  • Corrections to installed software information
  • Combined update and database migration to SAP S/4HANA (DMO: database migration option)
  • System conversion from SAP ERP to SAP S/4HANA

Installing Add-Ons

SAP delivers individual components and function enhancements as add-ons, for example, industry solutions. You can import add-ons with SAP Add-On Installation Tool or with SUM.
