Preparing Manual Test Cases

Once your manual test case is available in the test case list, you can fill it with test activities and prepare it for the test execution.

Prerequisites

  • You've created a manual test case, as described in Creating Manual Test Cases.

  • You have the role Project Administrator, Project Lead, or Project Member.

Procedure

  1. From the test case list, open the manual test case () that you want to prepare.

  2. In the General Information tab, you can find context, status, and object information for the test case.

    You can also add the following attributes:

    • Priority: Indicate the relative importance or urgency of the test case.

    • Owner: Assign the user who is responsible for the content of the test case.

    • Tags: Group test cases based on a common attribute (such as their test classification).

    Other attributes, such as the Context and the Type of the test case, can't be edited after the test case's initial creation.

  3. In the Structure tab, you can define the structure of the manual test case by choosing which activities to include in the scope of the test case, and in which order the testers should execute them.

    If your test case is based on a solution process flow diagram, predefined activities are already available. These activities have preset titles that can't be manually changed. If you want to exclude these existing activities, remove them from the scope of the test case.

  4. To manually add custom activities () to the test case, choose Add and enter a title and an activity number.

  5. To include a link to the relevant application to an activity, choose (Edit) next to the activity and provide the app name and a URL.

    This link allows testers to directly access the application during the test execution.

  6. In the Content tab, you can create the content of the test case by adding more granular substeps (Actions) to the activities.

    To add a new action to an activity, choose Add.

  7. For each action, enter detailed information for the testers:

    • Title: Enter a meaningful title that briefly describes the action.

    • Instructions: Describe the action in more detail. To illustrate your instructions, you can also add screenshots.

    • Evidence Required: Set this flag to ensure that there's a clear record of the actual result of the executed test action by requiring testers to provide screenshots as evidence.

    • Expected Result: Describe the expected behavior of the application if the corresponding instructions are carried out.

  8. In the Relations tab, assign related objects to your test case. This helps you ensure the test coverage of the objects and improve overall traceability, and lets you navigate seamlessly between them.

    When creating a relation to another SAP Cloud ALM object to a test case in the Test Preparation app, the object is only assigned to the default test case occurrence in the test plan (None).

  9. In the References tab, add links to relevant external documents or web pages as references.

    For instance, you can include links to process descriptions or learning material to support testers who may be unfamiliar with the test subject, or to test data sheets.

  10. Once your manual test case is ready, change its status to Prepared.

Result and Next Steps

Your test case is now available in the test execution and can be executed.
