Import: Process
Purpose
This process describes the import of sources, phrases, specification data, property trees, and report templates.

Prerequisites
In the SAP Environment
You have specified the settings in the
Import and Export
IMG section in Customizing forBasic Data and Tools
.You have checked the environment parameter
EXPORT_CHARACTER_NORM
in the IMG activitySpecify Environment Parameters
(see Character Standard ).You have the required authorizations and the relevant write authorization.
In an External Environment
The system from which the data originates (external environment) must be able to supply the data in the correct character standard . The external environment can also be an SAP system.
Importing data from a non-SAP system
To create the transfer file for importing data from an external system that is not an SAP system, proceed as follows:
You determine the relevant table fields for each transfer file.
You write the transfer file observing the following guidelines:
Importing data from an SAP system
To exchange data between two SAP systems, you must first export the data. The SAP system then creates the transfer file automatically, which you use to import the data.
Process Flow
You copy the transfer file that you have generated yourself or by exporting the data, to a directory on your PC.
To copy the transfer file from your PC directory to the application server, in the Basic Data and Tools menu choose
Tools
→Data Transfer
→Upload File
.
NoteTo avoid problems with carriage return and linefeed, for example, ensure that your operating system can read the file format correctly.

Run the
File check
(pre-import). If the SAP system finds errors, you can use theDownload file
function to load the transfer file to a directory on your PC, correct it in an ASCII editor, and then upload it again.Run the data import as a background job.
