Defining a BOM Makeup

You can define a BOM Makeup in the BOM Makeup screen. The screen is accessed via the Assignments section in the Dimension Group Panel or from the Assignments menu.

The BOM Makeup screen consists of the BOM Makeup section on the left and the Components section on the right.

The Components section lists all the members of the <Costs Objects 1> hierarchy. Only the leaf-level items are available for selection. You can expand or collapse the components hierarchy, or filter members using the filter box at the bottom of the section. To build a BOM Makeup, you can either drag and drop components to the BOM Makeup section, or right-click a component and use the Add to BOM Makeup option in the context menu. If you use the drag-and-drop method, you can drag a component onto other components in the BOM Makeup to create child and parent relationships. If you use the menu option, the component is added at the bottom of the BOM Makeup hierarchy, and can be moved if required. Other options in the Components context menu include the following:
  • Expand All
  • Collapse All
  • Apply Filter

In the same way that you build a dimension hierarchy, you construct a BOM Makeup by creating child and parent relationships to represent the assemblies that make up a product. For example, to build a BOM Makeup for a bicycle, you can make the Mountain Bicycle component the parent and add the Frame and Wheel components as children. As for dimension hierarchies, you can make one parent item the child of another. For example, in the BOM Makeup for a bicycle, a Wheel assembly is the parent of the Spokes and Hubs components, but the child of the Mountain Bike assembly. Unlike in dimension hierarchies however, the same component can be used a number of times in a BOM Makeup. For example, in a BOM Makeup that represents the products for a bicycle manufacturer, the assembly for each type of bicycle may include the same Wheel component. To add multiple components to another assembly quickly and easily, you can use the Copy In BOM Makeup context menu item.

Although you can use the same component more than once in the BOM Makeup, you cannot add the same component twice to the same assembly and recursive relationships are forbidden - that is, a component cannot be a child of itself.

Whereas each child item appears only once below its single parent in other dimension hierarchies; in the BOM Makeup screen, assemblies and sub-assemblies may be repeated in hierarchies in the case that they are used in multiple products. For example, the BOM Makeup for the bicycle manufacturer can be created as follows:
  • BMX Bike
    • Frame
    • Wheel
      • Hub
      • Rim
      • Spoke
  • Mountain Bike
    • Frame
    • Wheel
      • Hub
      • Rim
      • Spoke
  • Wheel
    • Hub
    • Rim
    • Spoke

As you build the BOM Makeup, changes to an assembly are immediately reflected wherever the assembly appears in the BOM Makeup.

To gain a more comprehensive view of the BOM Makeup, you can use the Expand All and Collapse All options in the context menu for the section or you can filter the BOM Makeup using the filter box at the bottom of the section.

The BOM Makeup section contains a Default Volume column in which you enter the default volume (the DefaultBOMMakeupVolume value) for a component in the makeup. By default, the volume is set to 1 piece (1.000 pc). You can edit both the value and the unit of measure using the Edit Default Volume option in the context menu. You can override the default DefaultBOMMakeupVolume value by entering new values in View Builder.

To remove a component from the BOM Makeup, you can use the DEL key or the Delete from BOM Makeup option in the context menu.

If you have unused items in the BOM Makeup - that is, items that do not form part of an SKU because they have no Makeup volumes - you can remove them all at the same time using the Perform BOM housekeeping context menu option.

Once you have defined the BOM Makeup, you can use the context menu options to copy or export it in text, rich text, or HTML format. You can also print the BOM Makeup.
