Possible reason

You linked the cells to another workbook:

• without first opening the workbook.
• by entering = in the relevant cell then selecting the cells in the other workbook.

Solution

Open the relevant workbook.

Enter the formula in the relevant cell. For example: 'C:\Data\Budget\<[Workbook1.xls]>Budget'!C3
