Assigning Output Devices to Logical OMS (LOMS)

Use

You perform an "inventory" of the output devices that are to use the OMS. When doing so, you determine that the output devices can be sorted into groups that use the output management system in different ways. You can assign each group to a different logical OMS (LOMS).

This division into different LOMSs is optional. However, you must certainly define at least one LOMS. If you want to create an output device that forwards its print requests to an OMS (access method E), then you have to assign it to a LOMS. A direct assignment to the real OMS is not possible.

Procedure

Assigning the SAP output devices to different LOMSs can be useful for the following reasons:

  • Using separate sets of operating system-specific commands: If your OMS is running on several platforms, you can define a different set of OMS commands for each operating system.

  • Using different OMS Services: You can use LOMSs to allow different sets of OMS services to be used, according to the printer.

  • Distribution of the Callback Workload: Should you want to distribute the workload of processing status reports from an OMS callback client, you can do so by defining separate LOMSs. For each LOMS, you can specify a different SAP server as the callback target.

If any of these requirements apply to you, then you may want to create your LOMS definitions accordingly.
