Live Data Connections to SAP Datasphere

You can create live data connections to SAP Datasphere systems, and access any SAP Datasphere Analytical Dataset, Analytic Model or Perspective within SAP Analytics Cloud.

Prerequisites

Before setting up your live connection in SAP Analytics Cloud, you first need to add the URL of your SAP Analytics Cloud as a trusted origin in your SAP Datasphere system.
  1. Log in to your SAP Datasphere system with an administrator account.
  2. From the side navigation, choose Start of the navigation path System Next navigation step  Administration Next navigation step App IntegrationEnd of the navigation path.
  3. Go to the Trusted Origins section and click Add a Trusted Origin.

  4. Add the URL of your separate SAP Analytics Cloud system.

  5. Click Save.
If you're using Chrome as a browser and want to use the incognito mode, make sure that all cookies are allowed:
  1. In Chrome, go to Settings, and click Privacy and security.
  2. Click Cookies and other site data.
  3. Under General settings, select Allow all cookies.

Context

If you have an SAP Datasphere tenant, you can leverage and combine the data management and modeling capabilities of SAP Datasphere with the business intelligence and other features in SAP Analytics Cloud.
Note
There are limitations to the features supported by live SAP Datasphere connections to SAP Analytics Cloud. Planning and smart features for instance are not supported. For a full list of the limitations to live SAP Datasphere connections to SAP Analytics Cloud, refer to SAP Note 2832606 Information published on SAP site.
By creating a live connection in the Connections area to your SAP Datasphere tenant, your content creators can build stories directly against the data that is modeled in SAP Datasphere. Live connections between SAP Analytics Cloud and SAP Datasphere can be established across tenants and data centers.

Any user with Execute permission on Other Datasources and Create, Read, Update, Delete, and Maintain permission on Connection can use this feature.

Tip
Analytical Datasets must be set for consumption first in SAP Datasphere. If you don't see the Analytical Dataset you're looking for after you've set up a live connection, check that the Analytical Dataset is deployed and set for consumption in your SAP Datasphere system.
You can check the status of your Analytical Dataset in the Data Builder's Properties panel.

Procedure

  1. From the side navigation, choose Start of the navigation path Connections Next navigation step  (Add Connection)End of the navigation path.
    The Select a data source dialog appears.
  2. Expand Connect to Live Data and select SAP Datasphere.
  3. In the dialog, enter a name and description for your connection.
    The connection name cannot be changed later.
  4. Add your SAP Datasphere host name and enter 443 as the HTTPS port.

    For example, mydatawarehouse.eu10.hcs.cloud.sap and 443. You can copy the host name from the browser's address bar when logged on to your SAP Datasphere tenant:

Note that SAML Single Sign On is preselected as the authentication method allowed. A valid SAP Datasphere user account in that tenant's Identity Provider is required to log on to the data source.

  1. Click OK and you'll be prompted to log on to SAP Datasphere.
  2. Enter a valid username and password for SAP Datasphere and click OK to set up the connection.

Next Steps

Once the connection is set up, you can test the connection by creating a new Story.
Note
The steps below might differ depending on whether you’re working with the Classic Design Experience, or the Optimized Design Experience. We recommend using the Optimized Design Experience to benefit from all the latest improvements brought to stories.

Classic Design Experience

Restriction
Analytic models cannot be consumed using the Classic Design Experience. If you want to work with analytic models, switch to the Optimized Design Experience.

  1. From the side navigation, choose Stories.

  2. Under Create New, choose one of the story types.

  3. Click Add data in the left panel.

    The Select a data source dialog appears.

  4. Choose Data from an existing dataset or model.
  5. In the Select Model dialog choose the SAP Datasphere Analytical Dataset option.

  6. Select an SAP Datasphere connection.

    Note
    If there is only one connection then it is selected automatically and this dialog is not displayed.
  7. If you’re asked to log in to SAP Datasphere, enter your credentials.
  8. Select the SAP Datasphere space with the data you want to access.
  9. Select an Analytical Dataset or Perspective and click OK.
    Restriction
    Analytic Models aren't available in stories created using the Classic Design Experience.
The data should load successfully. Add a simple chart with measures and dimensions to check that you see the data from SAP Datasphere.

Optimized Design Experience

  1. From the side navigation, choose Stories.

  2. Under Create New, choose one of the story types.

  3. Add SAP Datasphere data to your story using of the following method:
    • In the toolbar, click Add data in the left panel, or Add New Data in the main toolbar.
    • In the toolbar, click to add a chart or to add a table.
  4. Choose Data from an existing dataset or model.
  5. In the left panel of the Select Dataset or Model dialog, select an SAP Datasphere connection.

    The application lists all the spaces and data available in your SAP Datasphere system.

  6. If you’re asked to log in to SAP Datasphere, enter your credentials.
  7. Select an Analytical Dataset, an Analytic Model or a Perspective and click OK.
