Merging SAP BW Queries (Specifics for SAP BW)

Improve performance by saving time, round-trips, and memory by merging backend calls for multiple charts within a story.

Activate the query merge option for your story by clicking Start of the navigation path(Edit Story) Next navigation step Query SettingsEnd of the navigation path. Select Enable Query Merge.

Select Visualize Query Merge to display colored charts in Edit mode. The same color in different charts indicates that queries have been merged.

Chart Types

Instead of sending single queries for each chart widget, combine requests with each other. The following chart types support the query merge option:

  • Bar/Column

  • Combination Column & Line

  • Combination Stacked Column & Line

  • Stacked Bar/Column

  • Stacked Area

  • Line

  • Bullet

  • Numeric Point

Prerequisites for Combining Queries

In general, charts within a story need to have the same query and the same variables in order to combine the queries.

Note

(Beta) The query merge process is triggered when opening the story (also triggered with the Set variables dialog when Automatically open prompt when story opens is set) or when manually refreshing the story by clicking Refresh.

You can merge queries if the following factors apply:

  • Queries contain the same dimensions with the same hierarchies and drill.

  • Queries use the same sorting and ranking, but don't have any filters.

  • The story does not have filters defined inside the threshold panel.

  • (Beta) Queries contain the same thresholds, but don't have any filters.

  • The widget does not have a local filter on a dimension that is also used in a restriction in SAP BW.

  • Queries are part of the same receiver group if they use linked analysis.

  • The widget does not have a local filter on a member of the secondary structure of a query.

  • The widget filter is not defined as a complex tuple or range filter.

  • Dimension is not selected in a chart in combination with a hierarchical widget filter or hierarchical drilldown filter on the same dimension.

  • Presentation types are the same.

  • Zero Suppression for the query is not active when any dimension is selected in the chart.
