Smart Discovery Data Preview Dialog

Choose the Preview button from the Smart Discovery side panel to get a brief summary of the data you’ve selected to explore.

Selecting the Preview button opens the Smart Discovery Preview dialog, which presents a summary of the type of question you'd like to ask your data. The type of Smart Discovery results presented depends on your data selection.
Note

If Smart Discovery assesses that your data selection is unlikely to return good results, you're advised in advance that only an overview page can be generated.

Classification
When you select a dimension as your target, and define a target group, Smart Discovery analyzes the characteristics of your entity that differentiate the dimension members that belong to your selected target group, from the dimension members that don't belong to your target group.
Example
If your selected Entity is Customer, your selected Target is Product, and your selected target group is IPA, Beer, Pale Ale, Smart Discovery analyzes the characteristics of Customer that have bought IPA, Beer, Pale Ale compared with the ones that haven't bought IPA, Beer, Pale Ale. The following is an example of the type of textual information you'd then see in the Smart Discovery Preview dialog:

Smart Discovery analyze your data using machine learning to identify the characteristics of Customer that differentiate the two Product [IPA, Beer, Pale Ale] groups - (Yes) and (No)

- (Yes) represents Customer with at least one Product in [IPA, Beer, Pale Ale]

- (No) represents Customer without any Product in [IPA, Beer, Pale Ale]

You can also see two charts.

One chart represents the total number of instances of your selected entity in your data, which also explains to how many rows the dataset will be aggregated. The other chart shows a summary of the number of entities that have members in your target group versus the number of entities that have no members in your target group, shown in percentage.

Regression
If you've selected a measure as your target, Smart Discovery clearly indicates that it will analyze your target measure in the context of your entity. You can also see two numeric point charts. One numeric point chart represents the total number of instances of your selected entity in your data. The other numeric point chart shows the total target measure in the context of your entity.
Example
If your selected Entity is Customer, and your selected Target is Order Value, Smart Discovery analyzes all instances of Order Value in relation to Customer.

In both cases (selecting a dimension or a measure as your target), the Smart Discovery Data Preview dialog also gives you an indication of the types of story pages that are going to be provided to you, once you run Smart Discovery. The types of story pages that can be produced depend on your data selection.

You can also hover over the target value, entity value, and any applied filters to get more information on your selection.

Selecting the Preview button is optional. As you gain confidence in using Smart Discovery, you can always select the Run button straight away after selecting your Target and Entity.
