Converting an Embedded Dataset to a Public Dataset

You can convert an embedded dataset to a public dataset so it can be used by others.

Context

When you create a story and import data from a file or other data source, but not from an existing saved model or dataset, that data is saved as an embedded dataset (also called a private dataset) within the story, and this dataset doesn't appear in the Files list.

If you want others to be able to use this dataset, you can convert it to a public dataset.

Procedure

  1. Open a saved story that contains an embedded dataset.
If you're working on a new story, or if you've made some edits to a story since last saving it, you'll need to save the story before you can convert the embedded dataset to a public dataset.
  2. In the Grid view (), select (Convert to Public Dataset).
  3. Type a dataset name, and a description (optional).
  4. Select OK.

Next Steps

After you've converted an embedded dataset to a public one, you become the owner of the public dataset, and you may need to consider setting permissions and sharing on the new dataset, because the security settings for the new dataset are independent of the story that contained the embedded dataset.
