Supported Features and Known Limitations to SAP BPC Live Data Connections

Live connection to SAP BPC provides an alternative to use the powerful planning engine in BPC embedded to realize advanced and complex enterprise-wide planning. More new features are supported while some limitations remain.

Features Introduced by BPC Live Connection
  • Session management

The concept of the planning session still remains. In a planning session, you can choose whether to temporarily transfer data to the back end buffer, revert the value in the buffer, or to directly submit the buffer value to database.

Also if one user is using the data, the data is set to the change mode and no other users can change the data.

  • BW inverse formula

Inverse formulas defined in BW queries are supported.

  • Disaggregation

Disaggregation methods in BW queries can be applied when data is transferred to back end.

  • BW Query with currency translation

Currency translation is triggered on-the-fly when data is transferred to back end.

  • Work status/Data slice

BPC work status, or in the other word BW data slices takes effect in SAP Analytics Cloud. Data protected by a work status in BPC are protected in SAP Analytics Cloud.

  • Data Access Profile (DAP)

DAPs defined in BPC can be applied when a query is executed.

Data cells with read access only in BPC are read only in the SAP Analytics Cloud story. Data cells with write access in BPC are available for input in the SAP Analytics Cloud story. If the data cells don’t have read or write access, query data are not visible in the SAP Analytics Cloud story.

  • BW authorizations/environment authorizations

BW authorizations/environment authorizations are applicable at SAP Analytics Cloud side.

  • Planning sequence

You can directly trigger planning sequences created in BPC from a SAP Analytics Cloud story, as well as set variable values for the planning sequences. For more information, refer to Add and Trigger Planning Sequence for a BPC Live Data Connection Model.

  • Planning sequence when saving

A planning sequence defined by selecting the “Planning sequence when saving” option at BW side is executed automatically when data is submitted to the back end.

  • Query created based on an InfoObject flagged as InfoProvider

As query created based on an InfoObject flagged as InfoProvider is supported in SAP Analytics Cloud, you can perform master data planning by directly opening the query in SAP Analytics Cloud and modifying the InfoObject's dimension properties and texts. For more information, refer to Update BPC Dimension Properties and Texts in SAP Analytics Cloud.

  • Toggle on and off planning locks in story Designer panel and in View mode

After a table in a story is initially set to be viewed in display mode firstly to avoid bringing backend locks, in View mode a planner can switch to input mode if sees the needs to make data changes or switch back to read-only mode after making the changes. For more information, refer to Switch on or off Input Mode in a Story's View Mode.

  • BW key figure types

Planning is supported in the following BW key figure types:
    • FLTP - floating point number

    • CURR - currency field in BCD format

    • INT4

    • INT8

    • DEC - packed number in BCD format

    • QUAN - quantity field in BCD format

  • Multiple key figures

Now a query with multiple key figures can be created as a measure model in SAP Analytics Cloud.

  • Characteristic as key figure

Now in a BPC live connection model when the data source is a Direct Update aDSO, if the setting “Use Characteristic as Key Figure” is enabled for a specific characteristic, in SAP Analytics Cloud this dimension will also be treated as measure and can be used to input short comments, for example:

    • In a planning table, you can edit the measure transformed from dimension freely.

    • Value of the measure can be disaggregated, based on the prerequisite that all child members don't have values different from the measure.

    • You can copy and paste values of the measure or do mass data entry.

    • Digital boardroom, except for the percentage slider, also supports the measure.

When using the measures as short comments, there are some limitations inherited from BPC:

    • The measure cannot exceed 250 characters.

    • The comment have no history log.

    • Comments added to total overwrites comments in all its child members.

Also please be noted that in SAP Analytics Cloud, this kind of characteristic turned key figures are strings and cannot be used in charts or used as a numeric value in calculated measure or data explorer.

BPC Feature Limitations in a Live Connection
  • BPF integration is not supported. SAP Analytics Cloud story can be added as a generic hyperlink type step in BPF, but the context and parameter cannot be passed from BPF to SAP Analytics Cloud.

  • BPC/BW local query is not supported.

  • Cannot change BPC work status in SAP Analytics Cloud.

  • Tuple filter is not supported in BPC planning models.

  • Data input is not supported in the BPC live connection planning model with query setting Universal Display Hierarchy enabled.

Note

In addition to BPC embedded specific features and limitations, there are some known limitations and version dependency specifications on BW side, which equally applies to the embedded configuration of SAP BPC.
