Working with the Comment Widget

Use the comment widget together with data point comments to add more details to your story.

Prerequisites

Set up a story page that includes a table and a page filter.

Context

The comment widget allows you to add comments related to your data. The comment widget works with page filters to switch between different members, as well as with data point comments.

Restriction

You can't add comments to table cells from blended models or live data models.

Remember

To be visible in the comment widget, the data point comments need to be on cells that the page filter highlights.

When you add a data point comment, it will also show up in the widget. In addition, because the comments are attached to the data points they are stored within the model.

After setting up the widget, you won't even need to include the table on the same page as the comment widget. You could have the comment widget on an overview page for your story, or a page that includes a bar chart instead of a table.

Procedure

  1. Create a story and add a table with at least one dimension.
  2. Add a page filter or input control.
  3. From the Insert menu, select Start of the navigation pathAdd Next navigation step Comment WidgetEnd of the navigation path.

A comment widget is placed on the story page and the Builder panel displays the widget's filters.

  4. Add a dimension filter, selecting all dimension members or a subset.

Results

Adding a new comment to a data point will also update the comment widget.

Add a new story page and put a table on it with the same measures and dimensions. (You may want to copy the table to a new page.) You can add more data point comments for the same data point and they will be updated in the comment widget.
