Defining Content Categories

This transaction allows you to change content categories for physical documents, and to create new ones. Content categories identify logical storage locations. At the physical level, a content category is assigned to a content repository (see also Defining Content Repositories). The physical storage of documents is set by specifying content repositories.

Individual applications have at least one category, which is provided by SAP. If you want to use more categories, you must create them yourself.

Caution

After a production start, you should not normally make any more changes to existing entries.

Background: A document is identified by its ID and category. The category here represents the purely logical view. The category is mapped to a content repository, which represents the physical view.

Categories are mapped to content repositories at runtime. A later change therefore means that you cannot access documents that were already stored.

Changes would be necessary, for example if a repository or a content server moves completely to another host.

When a document is created, the system always evaluates the category that is initially specified. If no category is specified when a document is created, the class default is used. If no class default is available, the previous version is used.

When the document is checked in, the data defined as part of the distribution is evaluated.
