INSTALL.13 Problems Installing .NET 3.5

Symptom

Sometimes problems are experienced when installing the Microsoft Framework .NET 3.5 ( dotnetfx).

Solution

Without looking in-depth at the exact problems possible (usually when 2.0 is installed without 2.0 SP1), at least the following general advice (based on a number of Internet searches) can be given: in case of problems consider as a last resort to run a "clean-up" utility to first delete all versions of dotnetfx (search the Internet for "clean-up dotnetfx"). Afterwards install in sequence .NET 2.0 SP1, 3.0 SP1 and then 3.5. The reason behind this sequence is that 3.5 is dependent on prerequisite functionality included in 3.0 SP1, and that version is dependent on perquisite functionality included in 2.0 SP1.
