A standard KPI (key performance indicator) is a named aspect of the company strategy that can be measured by quantitative or qualitative data. A KPI is an aspect of the company strategy for success that can be measured by quantitative or qualitative data.

Use standard KPIs to measure the status and progress toward strategic objectives. Standard KPIs can also measure the progress toward initiatives, perspectives, and the entire context.

Standard KPIs are also the basis for measuring an index KPI.

Structure

A standard KPI has the following structure:

  • An identifying name

  • A status indicator

The color of the status indicator represents the performance of this KPI. The status indicator color is determined by matching the Score value of the KPI to the appropriate Index Value specified for the KPI which is matched to a particular color on the color dial. These details are shown in the KPI Details view.

For more information, see KPI Details.

Depending on how your scorecard administrator set up KPIs to display when there is missing data, a KPI may be displayed without a status indicator, or may not be displayed at all.

  • Either three or five score breakpoints that represent a range of possible performance points of the KPI

This depends on whether your administrator has set up three or five levels of status indicators. The breakpoints are depicted in the color dial in the KPI Details view. The red range represents poor performance, yellow represents average performance, and the green range represents good performance. How this KPI scores in relation to the breakpoint score values determines the color of its status indicator.

For more information, see KPI Details.

  • A trend symbol showing a black upward arrow, a black downward arrow, or a solid black line. The trend symbol appears in the Scorecard Overviews view and Scorecard Comparison if you are displaying that column using Select Format. The trend symbol appears in the KPI Details view.

The trend symbol represents the gap performance of each standard KPI. The standard KPI's Gap Performance measure is matched to the Stable Gap Performance Range. The symbol is determined by where it fits in that range.

If a KPI does not have a trend symbol, it means the scorecard administrator did not set these values for the KPI.

  • A description, which is typically a textual version of the calculation that makes up the KPI

For example, Return Rate = Returns / Units Sold.

  • Associated links (optional)

  • A perspective associated with this KPI

  • The name of a user who is responsible for this KPI

  • A characteristic of either leading or lagging

Lagging KPIs are commonly financial in nature and represent outcomes based on historical performance.

Leading KPIs are predictors of future performance, and provide direction about which lagging KPIs require more attention.

The leading/lagging information may or may not be displayed in the Scorecard Overviews view or Scorecard Comparison view. This depends on whether you have chosen to display the Lead/Lag column using the Select Format columns link.

  • A characteristic of either quantitative or qualitative

Quantitative KPIs are considered fact-based measurements. Qualitative KPIs are more subjective and mostly taken from semi-structured sources such as surveys, emails, or Excel worksheets. It is a subjective rating of the quality of execution of a KPI.

The quantitative and qualitative information may or may not be displayed in the Scorecard Overviews view or Scorecard Comparison view. This depends on whether you have chosen to display the Type column using the Select Format link.

  • The five measures from the dimensional model referenced in the model connection that make up this KPI: Actual, Target, Score, Trend of Actual, and Gap Performance

The deviation between actual and target is used to determine the standard KPI's score.

The Gap Performance measure determines the standard KPI's trend.
