This documentation describes how to configure and administrate the SAP Web Dispatcher.

Architecture

For information on the architecture and functions of the SAP Web Dispatcher see Architecture of the SAP Web Dispatcher.

Prerequisites

The SAP Web dispatcher must be installed. For more information about installation, see Importing the SAP Web Dispatcher.

Tasks

The table below lists the most important administration tasks.

Start and stop

Operating the SAP Web Dispatcher describes how you start and stop the SAP Web dispatcher. Here you will also find the prerequisites for operating the SAP Web Dispatcher.

Parameterization/configuration

SAP Web Dispatcher Profile Parameters describes the profile parameters for configuring the SAP Web dispatcher. The settings should be appropriate for normal operation.

Caution Caution

When you set the maximum values, note that unnecessarily large values can increase the Memory Requirement of the SAP Web Dispatchers.

End of the caution.

Example Example

You can find an example of an SAP Web dispatcher’s profile file in Example: Profile file of an SAP Web Dispatcher.

End of the example.

For information about linking logon groups to the Web dispatcher see Assigning Logon Groups.

Configuring the SAP Web Dispatcher / Message Server for Virtual Hosts explains how you have to configure the SAP Web dispatcher for compliance with virtual hosts.

Administration & Monitoring

You can use the Web administration interface to administrate, monitor, and set traces in, the SAP Web Dispatcher. The process is described in the section Using the Web Administration Interface.

Alternatively, you can access the Web dispatcher administration and monitoring functions from the command line. For more information refer to Using the icmon and wdispmon Command Line Programs.

You should only use these if you have problems with the Web administration.

You can also send operating system signals to the SAP Web Dispatcher. This can be useful if you want to execute functions in shell script. The SAP Web Dispatcher knows the same signals as the Internet Communication Manager (ICM). For details see Using Signals to Control the ICM.

Modification of HTTP requests

You can configure the Web dispatcher so that it modifies incoming HTTP requests before it forwards them to the application server.

You can manipulate header fields, filter (reject) specific requests, reformulate URLs, and so on.

You can find more information under Modifications of HTTP Requests.

Communication with the message server / application server using SSL

You can make the exchange of metadata with the message server and application servers secure by encrypting the data with SSL. For information see Meta Data Exchange Using SSL.

Handling HTTPS requests

The SAP Web dispatcher can handle HTTPS requests in different ways:

  • End-to-End SSL

  • Decrypt them and forwards them unencrypted

  • Decrypt and encrypt them again

These options are described in SAP Web Dispatcher and SSL.

You can find information about SSL configuration of the Web Dispatcher in the SAP Web Dispatcher to Support SSL, as well as in SDN under https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/howtoguides under Web Application Server.

Setting up error handling

You can configure the behavior of the SAP Web Dispatcher when responding to errors. For information, see Background Processing.

High Availability

To find out how to make the SAP Web Dispatcher a high availability solution see Architecture of the SAP Web Dispatcher.
