You can display the application servers that have registered themselves with the SAP message server by executing transaction SM51, or by choosing
. These are the instances of your SAP system. From their status, you can recognize which application servers are active in this SAP system. You can also administer the application servers, and manage and display the status of the users and work processes in all application servers belonging to the SAP system.
The function for managing users and work processes corresponds to the user and process tools.
For more information, see
The application server display includes the following information:
Server Name: The name of each application server.
The name usually consists of the host name, the SAP System name, and the SAP System number.
Host Name: Host name of each application server
Message Types: Services provided by the application server. This contains the configured SAP work process types (Dialog, update (Update and Upd2), Enqueue, Batch and Spool) as well as the following services:
ICM. This means that on the application server in question an Internet Communication Manager (ICM) is configured that can accept or send requests from the Internet (HTTP and other protocols).
For more information, see Internet Communication Manager (ICM).
J2EE: The Application Server Java is configured on this server. This means it is a server that can execute both ABAP and Java/J2EE programs.
For more information, see Architecture of AS Java.
VMC: The SAP Virtual Machine Container (VMC) is configured on this server, which means that there is a Java VM as well as an ABAP VM in the work process.
For more information, see SAP Virtual Machine Container
Server Status: An application server can have one of the following statuses:
initial
started
Active
Passive
shutdown
stop
For more information, see SAP Application Server States
Note
You can make changes to the state using

Host Address (IPv4): IP address of the host in IPv4 notation
Host Address (IPv6): IP address of the host in IPv6 notation
Port: Port number
Port (hex) : Port number in hexadecimal form.

For more information, see Operating System Monitor in the CCMS documentation
This option lets you make the changes made in the OS hosts and services tables in a running SAP system take effect by making the desired changes at operating system level and then, instead of restarting, resetting the host name buffer for the following components:
Selected application server
Message server
Internet Communication Manager (ICM)
Entire system (all host name buffers)
