User InterfaceLocate this document in the navigation structure

Purpose

Knowledge Management provides a flexible user interface for navigating in repositories. You can use parameters to modify the explorer that you use to navigate in folder hierarchies, and parts of the Details dialog box.

Features

You can use parameters to influence the layout of the user interface and the commands to be displayed. Groups of parameter settings form layout sets. For example, you can assign a layout set to an iView.

Role-Specific Layouts

Different user groups have different requirements as far as the user interface is concerned. For example, an end user needs an overview explorer with reduced functionality, whereas an administrator or content manager needs an explorer with all functionality including the option of carrying out mass operations.

The Knowledge Management delivery contains preconfigured layout sets and iViews, including one explorer iView for administrators and content managers, and another for end users.

The explorer for administrators and content managers has a defined layout. This means that when an administrator navigates in repositories or taxonomies, the layout is always the same within the iView. The layout set for this explorer is defined in a layout set that is referenced in the iView properties.

The explorer for the end user has a flexible layout. The layout can change within the iView from folder to folder when an end user navigates in repositories or taxonomies. The layout that is displayed by default in this explorer is defined in the default layout profile.

Folder-Specific Layouts

End users and content managers can assign a layout profile to a folder. When an end user navigates in the folder hierarchy to this folder, the layout changes within the iView.

A layout profile references a layout set that contains a group of parameter settings. Unlike a layout set, a layout profile also has a thumbnail view and language-dependent text. These are displayed in the Details dialog box for folders when you select a profile.

Note

Only certain layout sets are suitable for using in a layout profile. When you create layout sets, you should clearly distinguish between whether you want to use the layout set in an iView or in a layout profile for folders.

For more information, see Layout Sets and Layout Profiles

Layout with Flexible Control

The object handler (OTH) enables the layout to be controlled flexibly. You can apply complete layout sets or individual parameters to an entire repository, a subtree in a repository, or specific types of resource, for example.

Tip

For example, if you create two different layout sets for two different taxonomies, you can apply the layout sets to the relevant taxonomies in the taxonomies repository using the OTH.

If you want to set parameters at several places in the system, refer to Priority of Settings .

Constraints

You can only configure the user interface for the navigation in repositories and for a part of the Details dialog box. Changes within individual controls in the Details dialog box, such as the subscriptions control, are not supported. The parameterization is only intended for the explorer iView. Other iViews can not be parameterized.
