You need to perform various tasks to administer your database in an SAP environment. To do so, you can use either use DB2 tools or the DBA Cockpit (in the SAP system).

Tasks on Demand

The tasks on demand can be divided into the following areas:

      Recovering the database

      Managing Space

      Monitoring the system performance

      Configuring your database for remote monitoring

      Upgrading to a new database version

      Performing a system copy

Recovering the Database

In case of database failure with data loss, you have to recover your database.

Managing Space

You check the growth of tablespaces and if required maintain your tablespace settings according to your requirements using the DBA Cockpit.

Monitoring the System Performance

You check, for example:

      Lock waits and deadlocks

      Performance snapshots of your database

      Expensive SQL statements, database cache and access plans of these SQL statements using the EXPLAIN function

      Database configuration

Configuring your Database for Remote Monitoring

Using the DBA Cockpit, you can configure your database system either using database information that is stored in the system landscape directory (SLD) for automatic generation and update of system entries or manually using database connections and system entries.

Upgrading to a New Database Version

If required, you upgrade your database to the latest version.

Performing a System Copy

If required, you perform a system copy.

Periodic Tasks

Note

The list below shows tasks that you need to perform periodically. Whenever possible, use the DBA Planning Calendar for these monitoring tasks. You can choose from a range of predefined action patterns that include the tasks listed here.

Peform a system check and check the following:

      Backup and recovery

      Alert message log

      DBA Planning Calendar

      Database growth

      Database logs, that is, database diag log and database notification log
