Use

Using the pushbuttons available in the BEx Web Analyzer, you can quickly navigate to important functions that perform convenient ad hoc analysis of your business data. You can also use the navigation pane and context menu to access a variety of analysis functions.

Prerequisites

To carry out an ad hoc analysis based on a data provider from an external system, you must first create the external system in the portal system landscape.

External systems can be connected using JDBC or ODBO. The data from the external systems is available as external InfoProviders.

External systems are only visible in the BEx Web Analyzer when the BI Directory Provider property is activated for the system object in the system landscape.

For more information, see BI Java Connectors.

Features

The following functions are available as pushbuttons, in the navigation pane, and in the context menu:

New Analysis

You use this pushbutton to create a new ad hoc analysis by first selecting a data provider on which your analysis is to be based. You can select data providers from a BI system or from a non-SAP data source. You make this selection in the upper dropdown box of the dialog box.

Data providers from the BI system

Data providers of this type can be queries, query views, or InfoProviders, which you can select from the history, favorites, roles, or InfoArea views. In one of these views, select the required data provider and choose OK.  The data is displayed in the way specified in the Display As dropdown box.

Data providers from a non-SAP system

Data providers of this type are query views or InfoProviders, which you can select from the InfoArea view. In this view, select the required data provider and choose OK. The data is displayed in the way specified in the Display As dropdown box.

Now you can analyze your data ad hoc. The navigation pane, the interaction options in the analysis grid, and the context menu of the Web application are available for this:

      Navigation pane and analysis grid

The navigation pane displays the navigational state of the data provider. All the characteristics and structures of the data provider are listed. You can alter the navigational state to analyze your data. For example, you can perform the following navigation steps:

Use drag and drop to drag the characteristics or structures from the navigation pane to an axis (rows or columns) of the analysis grid, or remove them fully from the axes

Swap axes in the navigation pane by using drag and drop

Drag characteristics from the navigation pane to the filter pane by using drag and drop

You can also use the various navigation options available in the analysis grid, for example, by moving characteristics or structures in the analysis grid.

For more information, see Analyzing Data in an Analysis Grid (with Navigation and Filter Panes).

      Context Menu

You can use a variety of navigation functions in the context menu of the grid. For example, you can create new documents, show existing documents, or personalize the Web application.  For more information, see Context Menu Functions.

Note

Note the following constraints for some context menu options in the Web Analyzer:

You use the Print Version pushbutton to navigate to the function of the Print Version menu option in the Web Analyzer.

You use the Settings pushbutton on the Conditions tab page to navigate to the function of the Filter ® Conditions menu option in the Web Analyzer.

You use the Settings link on the Exceptions tab page to navigate to the function of the Exceptions menu option in the Web Analyzer. For more information, see Function Links.

You use the Settings link on the Table, Graphic, and Data Provider tab pages to navigate to the function of the Properties ® Web Item and Properties ® Data Provider menu options in the Web Analyzer. For more information, see Function Links.

The personalization for the Web application is linked to the query in the Web Analyzer.

A context menu is also available in the graphical display.

Open

You can open saved ad hoc analyses from your favorites or the BEx Portfolio view.

Save As…

You can save the current view of your ad hoc analysis with an appropriate name as a bookmark in your portal favorites or in the BEx Portfolio. This saves the type of data display (table, graphic, table and graphic) in addition to the navigational state of the data. To access the saved view of your ad hoc analysis again, choose Open.

Note

To save the navigational and drilldown state of the data as a new query view, choose Save View in the context menu of the Web application. You can use the query iView created in this way as a data provider for other BI applications.

Display As

You specify the type of display for the data using the dropdown box next to Display As. You can choose from the following options for displaying the data:

      in a table

      in a graphic

in a table and in a graphic

Information

Using this pushbutton, you can display information about the selected data provider. You can display information about the key date, the age of the data, the time of the last change, the person who last changed the query, and the date of the last refresh. You also receive information about which static and dynamic filter values the query has and the variable values with which the query is filled.

Send

You can open the broadcasting wizard and use information broadcasting functions. You can broadcast your ad hoc analysis. For more information, see Precalculating and Broadcasting Queries, Query Views, Web Templates, and Reports.

Print Version

Using this pushbutton, you can make settings for a print version of your ad hoc analysis. For example, you can specify the format for the print version and define whether a header is to appear on the pages printed. When you have made your settings and chosen OK, a PDF generation is triggered. You can print the generated PDF document. More information: Creation of Print Versions of BI Applications

Export to Excel

Using this pushbutton, you can export the query result to Microsoft Excel. The query data is displayed in the same way as queries are displayed in the BEx Analyzer. You see the filter restrictions and the data in the table. Exceptions are highlighted in color in the same way as they are on the Web. You can continue to edit the data using the Microsoft Excel functions.
