Use

BI background management facilitates error finding and the monitoring and management of processes. In addition, you can use BI background management to convert the administration of request information. This allows you to store the request information in tables, enabling quick access to request information, for example, for displaying information from InfoProvider administration.

The BI background management functions are available in the Administration functional area of the Data Warehousing Workbench under Batch Manager (transaction RSBATCH).

The administrative settings of BI background management include:

      Settings for parallel processing

BI background management allows you to process BI processes in the background in parallel, as long as processes support this. For example, you can use BI background management to activate the data in a DataStore object in the background in parallel. As well as the ability to run processes in parallel, using background processes also has other advantages, such as the creation of logs and the ability to better monitor processes.

Jump to transaction SE38 to execute the check and conversion programs for request information RSSTATMAN_CHECK_CONVERT_DTA (Edit Loadable InfoProviders) and RSSTATMAN_CHECK_CONVERT_PSA (Edit PSA Tables)

To attain better performance when displaying requests (for example, in the administration of the InfoProvider) and when loading data, the administration information for requests is now stored in special tables (RSSTATMANPART and RSSTATMANPARTT for InfoProviders and RSstatmanpsa and RSstatmanpsaT for PSA tables). This allows quicker access.

When you execute check and conversion programs, the system checks the status of all requests for the selected objects, changes or includes entries where necessary, and deletes entries of deleted requests.

The request information for newly loaded requests and objects created after the upgrade is automatically written to the new table. Therefore, these functions and reports primarily serve to transfer existing data to the new administration tables.

Determining selections for deleting messages in BI background management and internal parameters for background processes

You can determine the number of days after which the system deletes internal messages in BI background management and the internal parameters of background processes that are executed in background management.

Log and debugging functions include:

Displaying background jobs in BI background management

You can display or delete messages for individual jobs and delete the internal parameters of background processes.

      Displaying background processes

In the overview, the system displays different information on the background process; such as the number of jobs in a work process and the number of jobs in a work process that contain errors.

Search for logs in different areas

You can use different criteria to search for logs and messages. Supported searches include: search for logs for ABAP runtime errors (ST22), for SysLogs (SM21), application logs (SLG1), monitor logs, job logs (SM37), BI background management logs and transport logs and activation search results.

      Debugging BI background management processes

You can specify selections for debugging a process that is managed in BI background management and debug this process directly.

Effects on Existing Data

After an upgrade, execute the reports RSSTATMAN_CHECK_CONVERT_DTA and RSSTATMAN_CHECK_CONVERT_PSA at least once in the background for all objects (InfoProviders and PSA tables). This ensures that the available request information for existing objects is written to the new table for quick access, and the new status management is filled with the existing data.

Effects on System Administration

Check whether enough background processes (type BTC or BGD) are available in the system. BI background management requires more background work processes than were previously needed in BI.
