Definition

Upon request, provides the data for a specific business unit to SAP BW.

Use

DataSources supply the metadata description of source data.

Structure

From a technical viewpoint, the DataSource includes a quantity of fields that logically belong together that are offered for data transfer into SAP BW in a flat structure - the extract structure.

The BW-relevant metadata for the DataSource is transferred from the source system into SAP BW via replication depending on the type of source (with SAP systems as sources systems) or they are defined directly in BW (for example with files as source systems).

In the transfer structure, which displays a selection of fields for the DataSource and ultimately contains important information for a business process, the data is transferred from the source into SAP BW upon request of the SAP BW.
