Use

With the monitoring architecture, SAP provides a flexible and universally usable infrastructure with which you can centrally monitor your entire IT landscape and which quickly and reliably reports problems that occur.

The monitoring components that support you when operating your system landscape are introduced below.

Description

Operating System Monitor

You can use the operating system monitor to monitor the following operating system resources:

·        Virtual memory

·        Physical memory

·        CPU

·        File system administration

·        Physical disks

·        Network

Transaction ST06 displays the operating system data for the local server. Transaction OS07 displays the data for the entire system.

The Alert Monitor

Alerts are a central element of monitoring. They quickly and reliably report faults – such as when a reported value exceeds or falls below a particular threshold value, or an IT component is inactive for a defined period of time.

These alerts are displayed in the Alert Monitor (transaction RZ20). This eases the workload on the system administrators, since they only need to track the problem messages, instead of a large quantity of system data.

CCMS Monitoring Console

The CCMS Monitoring Console (MC) allows the clear display of monitoring data for central monitoring of SAP system landscapes. This data comes from the following sources:

·        CCMS monitoring architecture

·        Kernel statistics

·        Process Monitoring Infrastructure

Both the configuration of the landscapes and the display of the monitored components are so intuitive that the MC can also easily be operated by less specialized employees without training or long periods of adjustment.

Workload Monitor

The Workload Monitor (transaction ST03) displays statistical data for the local ABAP system. You can use the workload overview to analyze the performance of a system. You can also, for example, display all values for all instances and compare the performance of individual instances over particular periods of time. The large number of analysis views and collected data allow you to quickly determine the cause of possible performance problems.

Global Workload Monitor

The Global Workload Monitor (transaction ST03G) displays statistical records for entire landscapes and also statistical records for the non-ABAP components J2EE Engine, BC, and ITS. You can, for example, use the Global Workload Monitor to display which workload data is generated when external components are called.

Functional Trace

While the Global Workload Monitor only displays aggregated data, you can use the functional trace (transaction STATTRACE) to displays raw statistical data (single records) from complex system landscapes for ABAP systems and the non-ABAP systems J2EE Engine, BC, and ITS. The raw statistical data is transferred directly to the functional trance by RFC, or, in the case of non-ABAP systems, by agents, and therefore offers a finer resolution of information. For example, you can use the functional trace to trace actions belonging to a business process across system boundaries. You can also use the functional trace to display, and in some cases activate, traces.

ICM Monitor

You can use the ICM monitor (transaction SMICM) to monitor and administer the Internet Communication Manager, which receives and sends the requests from or to the Internet (in the server role, for example, the inbound HTTP requests).
