Knowledge Management consists of the following subcomponents with different tasks:

      Content Management

      Search and Classification (TREX)

You can distribute these subcomponents on different servers for better scalability.

Description

Repository Framework

The repository framework is the physical storage location for documents. It provides a range of basic functions for documents and folders. It enables the integration of documents into a virtual hierarchy and a namespace. The documents can be stored on different systems (Windows, WebDAV, or HTTP). Repository managers are used to access these systems. There are internal repositories and external repositories, depending on the system.

For more information, see Repositories and Repository Managers in the KM administration guide.

Repository Services

The repository services connect individual repositories with services, such as indexing, subscription, and status management. For more information, see Repository Services in the KM administration guide.

Global Services

Global services are responsible for many tasks required by all repository managers or applications. For example, crawlers are used to index documents. These crawlers deliver objects and structures from internal and external repositories. Automatic notifications arrive in your inbox. Global services also allow you to create caches or properties. For more information, see Global Services in the KM administration guide.

Search and Classification (TREX)

The Search and Classification (TREX) component enables various types of search and classification operations (see TREX Components).

WebDAV Server

The WebDAV server that is part of KM enables authoring tools to directly read and write documents without going through the portal.

ICE Server

The ICE server enables other Content Management systems to exchange packages based on a subscription/offering schema.

KM Controls

KM contains a range of KM controls that you can reuse to build iViews.

KM iViews

You can use KM iViews to access documents and applications, and for administration. You can use form-based and time-dependent publishing if you want to publish documents. You use the XML Forms Builder for the former. This allows you to create XML forms using a graphical user interface. You can use these forms to create structured documents. You use the Navigation iView to navigate in repositories and folders, find the documents you need, open them, and edit them with the appropriate program. For more information, see iView Templates in the KM administration guide.
