Automatic Clearing
When the bank sends you a Multiple Credit Advice (CREMUL) message with details of payments made by your customers, you read it using the Electronic Bank Statement program.
The program tries to identify which items the customers have paid. If it is successful, it clears the payment item against the customer item and generates an accounting document to record the payment.
Your customers may have used any one of various numbers to identify the payments. Even if you have asked them to use a particular number, there is no guarantee that they will use it. For this reason, you can customize the system so that it tries a range of different reference numbers.
Create a new transaction type, NO, in Customizing for Financial Accounting (FI), by choosing Bank Accounting ® Business Transactions ® Payment Transactions ® Electronic Bank Statement ® Make Global Settings for Electronic Bank Statement.

You can use the same transaction type that you use for payments by payment order, if you use that solution as well (see Automatic Clearing).
In the same IMG activity, assign the external transaction types (or “bank operations,” as they are known in the CREMUL specifications) to algorithm 35. This algorithm tries to match the customer item using the following numbers, in the given order:
...
1. The invoice’s payment reference number
2. The invoice’s document number
3. The invoice’s reference document number
When you execute the Electronic Bank Statement program, it tries to match the payment items to the customer items using the payment reference number, then the invoice’s document number, and so on. When it has finished, it displays a list of the payment items that it was unable to clear, so that you can clear them manually.
