Creating Reference Packing
Instructions
If you want to pack several materials in the same way (for example, similarly constructed materials that are only different in terms of color), you need to create a separate packing instruction for all the materials. Instead of this, you can maintain a reference packing instruction that can be used by each of the materials.
In Customizing, you have activated the Reference Material for Packing indicator. For more information, see the Implementation Guide (IMG) under Logistics General ® Material Master ® Basic Settings ® Make Global Settings.
In Customizing, you have set up a screen sequence that uses the subscreen SAPLMGD1 2011 for the Basic Data view, and uses subscreen SAPLMGD1 2164 for the General/Plant Data view. For more information, see the Implementation Guide (IMG) under Logistics - General ® Material Master ® Configuring the Material Master ® Assign Screen Sequences to User/Material Type/Transaction/Industry Sector or Define Structure of Data Screens for Each Screen Sequence.

1. In the material master, create a reference material as a substitute for the material to pack. The reference packing instruction uses this reference material. To do this, choose Logistics ® Materials Management ® Material Master ® Material ® Create (General) ® Immediately, and enter the required data in the Basic Data 1 and Gen. Sales/Plant view.

A reference material is always plant-specific.
Create the reference material for all units of measure that the materials assigned to the reference material have as a base unit of measure.
2. In all the material masters for the materials, specify that you want to pack using the reference packing instruction. In the Basic Data 1 view in the Reference Material Packing Instruction field, enter the name of the reference material you created.

Do not flag one of the existing materials to pack as the reference material. You must create the reference material in the system in addition to the materials to pack.
3. Create the reference packing instruction in the same way as described in Create a Packing Instruction. Choose the item category R for reference material, and enter the description of the reference material.
You have created a reference packing instruction that you can enter in the relevant determination record as a packing instruction.
