System landscape files in the Portal Content Directory contain information on how to connect to systems from the Enterprise Portal. They are primarily used to describe connections to SAP Systems.
The following diagram illustrates how the Enterprise Portal connects to SAP Systems.

In most cases, SAP systems are accessed via HTTP or HTTPS connections. For example, if SAP transactions, Internet Application Components (IACs), or MiniApps are integrated in the portal, the browser accesses the Internet Transaction Server (ITS) in front of the SAP System directly via HTTP or HTTPS. The portal can use different technologies to establish HTTP/HTTPS connections to the same system. Each of these is described as a Web access point. For details on how to define Web access points and other system attributes, see
Defining Component Systems. If SAP Systems are accessed through Master iViews (other than
SAPApplication) the portal connects to the system through the Java iView Runtime. In this case the system is accessed through remote function calls (RFC). These are invoked using the SAP Java Connector (JCo). Any SAP Systems that are accessed via RFC must be defined as described in Defining JCo Destinations.Additional Information
