Item Unique Identification (Additional Functions) (ERP_UID_02)

You can use this business function to communicate item unique identification (IUID) information effectively within supplier networks. The IUID information comprises the unique item identifiers (UII) and pedigree data for the main items and for any embedded items that were incorporated into the main items during production.

In addition, this business function provides more flexible and accurate message creation and processing by enabling you to create manual change messages, analyze structures, and track IDocs created for specific UIIs. Automatic message creation has been enhanced to allow change messages to be triggered by changes to functional location hierarchies.

Integration

To ensure that changed technical structures meet the requirements for IUID messaging, a new consistency check has been added to the following Plant Maintenance functions:

  • Equipment Dismantling/Installation with Goods Movement (transaction IE4N)

  • Change Equipment (transaction IE02)

  • Change Functional Location (transaction IL02)

The system performs the consistency check before it sends the updated structure information to the registry.

Communication of Pedigree Data in Supplier Networks
  • IUID Delivery Board and the Pedigree Database

    The end customer and the registry require not only IUID information for the end item, but also information about UIIs incorporated into the end item during production. For this reason, UIIs and their related pedigree data must be communicated from supplier to supplier and from supplier to end customer and registry.

    The IUID delivery board enables you to create IUID messages based on outbound deliveries. The message contains the UIIs and pedigree data for the main items assigned to the outbound delivery and for any embedded items. You can send the message to another supplier on a higher level of the supply network.

    The pedigree database stores the pedigree data for UIIs that you receive from suppliers on a lower level of the supplier network. It also provides the pedigree data for the IUID messages that you create using the IUID delivery board or the IUID status board.

  • IDoc Type IUID_MESSAGE_COM02

    This IDoc type contains a new field for the customer number. When you send a message using the IUID delivery board, it enables the system to route the message to the correct target system based on the customer number, which is retrieved from the outbound delivery. If you send this IDoc type from the IUID status board the system retrieves the customer number based on the registry customer specified in Customizing for Logistics – General under   Item Unique Identification (IUID)   Define UID Handling  .

  • Manual Creation of IUID Change Messages

    You can manually retrieve and change the current registry information for an item that has a confirmed UII and send the changes to the registry. This enables you to deal with unexpected situations in which the system cannot generate a change message automatically because there is insufficient information to determine which type of content needs to be changed.

  • Structure Analysis

    You can display and analyze the entire structure of IUID-related pieces of equipment for an item selected in the IUID status board or the IUID delivery board. The system displays the top-level UII and all embedded UIIs and provides key information for the UIIs at a glance; for example, whether error or warning messages were issued for each UII. This enables you to check if all items in the structure fulfill the requirements for being sent to the registry and provides you with a comprehensive, simple way of identifying errors.

  • Application Log for Error Messages

    A new application log enables you to check all error messages issued during message creation for a specific UII. In addition to the error messages, this log contains context data, for example, the UII, the IUID process, and an outbound delivery document number.

  • Object Links for Tracking IDocs

    The system creates object links between IDoc messages and pieces of equipment, and IDoc messages and outbound deliveries. It creates the links when a message is triggered by a change event and when you create messages from the IUID status board or the IUID delivery board. This enables you to track which IDoc messages have been created for a specific item or outbound delivery.

IUID Messages for Installing and Dismantling Functional Locations

If you make changes to technical structures that contain functional locations, for example, using transaction IE4N, IUID change messages are automatically sent to the registry. The change message contains the new structure information for the installed or dismantled UII and for the other UIIs in the structure. For example, if you dismantle a piece of equipment with a UII from a functional location hierarchy, UIIs that were below this UII may now have a new superior UII as a result.

Before it sends the updated structure information to the registry, the system performs the new consistency check added to transactions IE4N, IE02, and IL02 to ensure that the top-level UII is unique. If this is not the case, the system issues a warning or error message. You define which type of message is issued in Customizing for Logistics - General under   Item Unique Identification (IUID)   Define UID Handling  .
