The aim of the concept of specializations and generalizations is to allow the subdivision of entity types into subtypes. There are a number of different categories of specialization. The specialization category determines the criterion for the specialization. Specializations are linked to the source entity type (=generalization) via the specialization category.

1. On the Display Entity Type: Definition screen, choose Goto ® Generalizations:
2. The screen Display Generalizations shows you the generalizations that exist for this entity type.
You can access the definition of an entity type by double-clicking its name. To access the definition of a generalization, position the cursor on a specialization category and choose Goto ® Generalization.
First ensure that the entity type and the corresponding specialization category for the generalization exist.
3. On the Display Entity Type: Definition screen, choose Goto ® Generalizations:
4. On the Maintain Generalizations screen, choose Generalization ® Create general.... The Create Generalization dialog box appears.
5. Enter the name of the generalization under Entity type from and the number of the specialization category under Specializ. Cat. Confirm the dialog box.
6. The Change Generalization screen is displayed. Save the generalization here.
7. On the Change Entity Type:Definition screen, choose Goto ® Generalization.
8. On the Change Generalizations screen, position the cursor on a specialization category and choose Goto ® Generalization.
9. On the next screen you can delete the generalization by choosing Generalization ® Delete.
